Frontlist | Former DC Artist Becomes a Millionaire Selling Wonder Woman NFTs
A four-day auction of 914 Wonder Woman-themed NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) drawn by former Wonder Woman artist, Jose Delbo, brought in nearly $2 million as the NFT craze continues to explode in popularity. Delbo, who is 87 years old, was the regular artist on Wonder Woman from 1976-1981. He is also known for his work on the Transformers comic book series from Marvel plus the Batgirl feature in Batman Family and briefly the Superman/Batman feature in World's Finest Comics. He partnered with the Italian crypto art duo Hackatao to create the series, which was called Heroines. NFTs are cryptocurrency where each piece accompanies artwork or a video clip. Therefore, in effect, you are purchasing an original work of art by Delbo that is simply a digital artwork rather than a physical drawing. In the description of the auction, it describes the artwork as, This is a signed and limited edition digital creation. You're purchasing the full non-commercial rights to this creation. Upon purchase, this creation will be transferred to your digital wallet. If you don't have one, we'll provide one for you. You may download the full-sized creation to display or even print for personal use. In other words, purchasing an NFT gives you a unique digital art piece that comes with a certificate of authenticity. For this particular auction, Delbo and Hackatao created distinctive pieces involving Wonder Woman and then each creation would be limited to a certain amount of NFTs. For instance, this piece of Wonder Woman holding the world with a video star background (dubbed Heroines - Superstars) was limited to 129 pieces...

All 129 of them sold out, with each piece selling for a different price, but at least one of them went for $3,000. The centerpiece of the auction, though, was this piece, Heroines - Weight of the World where it was limited to just a single copy. It sold for almost $300,000.

Delbo has a number of other pieces still up for sale on his site, featuring characters like Batman, Deadpool, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Darth Vader, the Decepticons and more. These are all similar NFT setups to the Heroines auction. Other artists have gotten in on the NFT act, as well, with an Adam Kubert Spider-Man NFT selling for $25,000 recently.
